The Reception will take place at the Museum of Contemporary Art. The reception will mark Europe Day in Sydney and guests will witness the lighting of the Sydney Opera House sails in the EU´s blue. The night´s theme will be the 60th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, which founded the European Economic Community and led to the creation of the European Union.

The EU is Australias first investment partner, with a bilateral relationship amounting to $1.6 trillion, and is the country's second-largest trade partner after China. On 6 April 2017, the Australian Minister of Trade, Investment and Tourism The Hon Steven Ciobo MP and the European Commissioner for Trade Dr Cecilia Malmstrøm announced the end of the Australia-EU Free Trade Agreement scoping exercise, which paves the way for the negotiations to get underway later this year.
